Tees teen Jessica Robinson is best bet in Dorothy TV contest
TEESSIDE'S own talented teen Jessica Robinson has been named favourite to become Andrew Lloyd Webber's Dorothy in his new musical The Wizard of Oz.
The 18-year-old is the bookies’ favourite to win BBC’s Over The Rainbow and take to the stage as Dorothy.
Jessica, from Normanby, Middlesbrough, is currently 9/4 with Paddy Power to win the talent contest.
She is also the William Hill favourite at 5/2.
William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “We have been impressed by Jessica and she is the standout favourite attracting 80% of our total bets.”
Jessica, who began singing at the age of six, and a former student of Northern School of Music in Hartlepool, is one of 10 hopefuls battling it out to win the coveted role, made famous by Judy Garland in the 1939 film.
Saturday’s show saw Jessica - who has wowed North-east audiences in the past with roles including Teesside Musical Theatre Company’s West Side Story - impressing judges with her performance of Amy Winehouse’s hit Rehab.
Judge Charlotte Church told Jessica her performance was “unbelievable”, adding: “I can’t stop watching you, that was brilliant.”
Student Danielle Hope, and Liverpool’s Stephanie Davis, both currently at 4/1 with Paddy Power, are expected to be the teenager’s closest rivals on the programme.
Steph Fearon is currently the outsider at 33/1 after she found herself in the bottom two on Sunday’s results show.
Saturday’s episode showed Jessica saying she wanted to win the role to help put Middlesbrough on the map.
You can follow Jessica’s progress with Over The Rainbow when it continues next Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
